As part of our women’s services, Riverview Health offers reliable obstetric and gynecologic ultrasounds in Noblesville, IN. Using high-frequency sound waves, an ultrasound creates images of soft tissue within the body.

An ultrasound during pregnancy allows you and your obstetrician to see your baby in the womb. An ultrasound may also be performed to evaluate any problems, such as pelvic pain, infertility or vaginal bleeding. An ultrasound is a safe, painless procedure that’s performed in the comfort and privacy of your doctor’s office.

Reasons for an Ultrasound

Your doctor may recommend an ultrasound for either obstetric or gynecological reasons.

Obstetric Ultrasound

If you’re an expecting mother, Riverview Health Maternity provides 3D and 4D ultrasound technology that allows you to view your baby in the womb. You can usually find out the gender of your baby through an ultrasound performed at 20 weeks or later.

An ultrasound during pregnancy can help your doctor confirm:

  • How your baby is growing and its anatomy
  • Which direction your baby is positioned
  • Amniotic fluid levels
  • Placenta location
  • High-risk situations
  • Gynecological Ultrasound

If your doctor wishes to get a clearer picture of your uterus, ovaries and other reproductive organs, a gynecologic or pelvic ultrasound can be performed in the comfort and privacy of your doctor’s office. Once the ultrasound is complete, your women’s health provider will review the findings and discuss them with you.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound

During an ultrasound, you’ll need to change into a gown. After lying down on the exam table, your provider will apply a special gel to your skin. Then, a device called a transducer will be pressed against your skin over the area being examined. The transducer sends sound waves into your body and receives the waves that bounce back, creating images on a computer for you and your provider to view. The ultrasound usually lasts about 30 minutes.
