Also known as knee arthroplasty, knee replacement surgery replaces a damaged knee joint with an artificial joint. Your new joint will let you bend and move your lower leg back and forth without pain.

If you’re suffering from knee pain, ask the orthopedic specialists at Riverview Health if you’re an ideal candidate for a total or partial knee replacement.

Why Orthopedic Surgeons Perform Knee Replacements

Our surgeons use knee replacement to treat severe knee joint damage that’s the result of past injuries, arthritis or knee infections.

You may be a good candidate for knee replacement if you find that:

  • Knee pain or stiffness limits your daily activities
  • Other treatments (such as physical therapy or pain injections) have been unsuccessful
  • X-rays show severe joint damage that’s accompanied by a loss of cartilage and bone
  • You have knee pain while resting
  • Your knee joint is deformed

If you’re considering knee replacement at Riverview Health, ask our orthopedic experts if you’re a good candidate for minimally invasive surgery, as it may lead to a faster recovery and less pain than traditional open surgery.

What You Should Expect

A knee replacement begins with a surgeon making an incision in your knee so the damaged cartilage and bone can be removed before replacing it with plastic or metal surfaces. This surgery can be performed as either a total knee replacement or a partial knee replacement (in which the surgeon removes only one side of the joint).

This is considered to be major surgery that requires anesthesia. You should plan to spend a few days in the hospital, as well as participate in a Riverview Health physical therapy program. You’ll likely feel back to normal within 8-12 weeks, although full recovery can take up to a year.

How Everyday Life May Be Different

Many people are able to return to activities they were not able to do prior to their knee replacement surgery. The vast majority of artificial knee joints still function well 15 years after your procedure, although you can help extend the life of your implant by avoiding contact sports, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy weight

Give your injured knees the TLC they need by trusting your knee replacement to the orthopedic specialists at Riverview Health. Request an appointment with our orthopedic team today by calling 317.565.0505 or by completing an appointment request form.
