7 Tips for Eating Healthy On-the-Go

Face it — there never seems to be enough time in the day. You have a to-do list a mile long and somehow you still have to find time to take care of yourself and your family by eating right. Even though you know that healthy, homemade meals are best, sometimes there’s no avoiding a meal out at a less-than-healthy establishment.

Forget feeling guilty; it doesn’t help. Instead, focus on maximizing positive choices. With a little research and planning, it’s possible to eat right when you’re pressed for time. Consider these tips and guidelines for smarter eating on the go:

1. Fast Does Not Always Mean Fried
It’s getting easier to find healthy, convenient alternatives to fried foods on fast food menus. Opt for anything that is raw, steamed, grilled, roasted or baked, or try an entrée-sized salad.

2. Avoid High-Fat Add-Ons
Order a side salad or fruit instead of fries. Request salad dressing, sauce, cheese or toppings on the side so that you can apply sparingly.

3. Mind Your Portions
In the 1950s, the average size of a hamburger was 1.5 ounces. Today’s burgers weigh in at around 8 ounces. Share entrées between your family or save the other half for later.

4. Drink Water
Make H2O the beverage of choice. Tired of plain water? Try adding a squeeze of lemon or using sparkling spring water instead.

5. Opt for Color
Picking a colorful fruit or veggie salad will automatically up the nutrition in your meal.

6. Beware the Combo Meal
You’re a savvy budgeter, so it can feel like a waste of a good deal if you don’t take the combo. But you’ll save more money (and calories!) by not buying extra items you didn’t really want just because they were part of a deal.

7. Plan Ahead
Keep your purse, bag and car ready for moments when hunger strikes. Dried fruits, mixed nuts and cereals stay fresh and transport easily in baggies or reusable storage containers.
