It’s the holiday season—a time of excitement and joy for many of us. For millions of Americans however, it can be a time of sorrow and depression. There are a variety of factors that contribute to these unexpected feelings.
Stress during the holidays
While the holidays can be full of joyous events, including buying gifts, visiting relatives and traveling, they can also be full of stressful events, such as buying gifts, visiting relatives and traveling. The same things that create the joyous atmosphere of the holidays can just as easily bring stress and unhappiness.
Such stress and unhappiness can stem from limited financial resources, family tensions, fatigue and unrealistic expectations. It can be a strain, both financially and mentally, to attempt to provide the perfect gift for every person on your list; the effort needed to do so can add to your debt and anxiety.
And while having those folks around can be a wonderful treat, they can also stir up family tensions and conflicts you don’t ordinarily confront during the year.
Combating holiday depression
The best way to combat holiday depression? Reduce your stress level by lowering expectations during the holidays, not over-spending, avoiding conflict with relatives, taking time to relax and planning ahead to avoid last-minute shopping or preparations.
Remember that while the holidays can be stressful, they are supposed to be a time of excitement and joy. Don’t let stress and depression during the holidays ruin your holiday memories. Take time to implement some of these tips and contact your Riverview Health primary care provider if you have questions or concerns about seasonal depression.
