Back to School, Back to the Doctor?

In the rush of back-to-school preparations, with all the school supplies, new clothes, backpacks, school schedules and fees, what about a yearly checkup? Is it important to take a healthy kid to see the doctor?

A physical exam is often required for children playing sports, but sports physicals performed by school districts might not cover everything, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, which recommends a yearly exam for all children.

A reliable authority

For example, sports physicals often don’t address vaccinations or lifestyle issues for pre-teens and teenagers, such as smoking, depression, bullying and helmet safety. A consistent relationship with a pediatrician is important to kids and their parents, as a trusted expert in your child’s growth and development.

A physical exam likely will cover:

  • Family history of serious illness and any change in family history
  • Allergies
  • Past history of illness
  • Previous hospitalizations or surgeries
  • Current medications
  • Any current, troubling symptoms
  • Vaccination status
  • Any suggested screenings, such as cholesterol
  • Sexual health, depending on age
  • Nutrition
  • Exercise
  • Injuries

For any child, athlete or artist, navigating adolescence can be a delicate endeavor. Your child’s long-term relationship with a trusted, caring pediatrician can provide a safe place to discuss sensitive issues that they might hesitate sharing with others. With their overall future health and well-being in mind, schedule a back-to-school physical today.
