Types of Birth Control
The most common types of birth control include the following:
- Barriers. These create a barrier to stop sperm from reaching the egg, and include male and female condoms, which can be purchased over-the-counter. In addition, sponges and spermicides can also be bought without a prescription. You’ll need a prescription for a diaphragm, cervical cap or cervical shield.
- Hormonal. This includes birth control pills, insertable rings, shots, implants and stick-on patches. You’ll need a prescription from your doctor to use these.
- IUD. Intrauterine devices are small, plastic devices that your doctor inserts into your uterus. Some that use hormones are good for up to five years and some with no hormones are good for up to 10 years.
- Tubal ligation. Also known as tubal sterilization, a tubal ligation is a procedure in which the fallopian tubes are cut or blocked to prevent pregnancy. This is commonly known as having your tubes tied.
