If you’ve recently had a baby, you might be experiencing an unwelcome side effect in addition to sore nipples and stretch marks—hair loss. Around 40 to 50 percent of women experience hair loss during the postpartum period. If giant clumps of hair are falling out every time you brush your hair, don’t panic. The condition is only temporary.
Why Does It Happen?
When you are pregnant, your estrogen levels increase. That’s why often, your hair may thicken and grow glossy during your pregnancy. At this same time, more of your hair follicles than usual go into a dormant phase, delaying normal hair loss. As estrogen levels in your body fall after giving birth, your formerly resting follicles come back online, which means pushing out the hair strands to grow new hair. Postpartum hair loss usually hits a peak around three to four months after delivery. Most women have their hair return to normal by their child’s first birthday.
Is There Anything That Can Help?
Only time can fully restore your hair, but there are a few things you can do to prevent additional stress on your tresses in the meantime.
You should also make sure to discuss your hair loss with your physician. If the amount of hair loss seems excessive or continues for a very long time, there could be a hormonal imbalance. If large bald spots are appearing, you should schedule an appointment with your doctor, as it could be the sign of another medical condition.
