Perimenopause: The Changes Before “The Change”

Menopause. It’s the “change of life” that all women experience. The time leading up to menopause, when women start to experience menopause-related changes, is called perimenopause.

Lasting two to eight years, and including the first full year after your final period, perimenopause is a natural part of aging that marks the end of your reproductive years. During perimenopause your ovaries begin to shut down and produce less of the hormones estrogen and progesterone.

For most women perimenopause starts between the ages of 45 and 55. Precisely when perimenopause starts and how long it lasts varies from woman to woman, but symptoms generally include a change in the pattern of periods, hot flashes and night sweats, mood swings, vaginal dryness, urinary problems, memory issues and trouble sleeping.

Finding relief from symptoms

For many women, oral contraceptives can ease symptoms such as hot flashes, vaginal dryness and mood swings. After menopause, women experiencing symptoms may wish to consider switching from birth control pills to menopause hormone therapy (HT), as the lower hormone dosage reduces the risk of side effects.

Healthy lifestyle choices can also help relieve symptoms:

  • Eat right. At this stage of life, a healthy diet is more important than ever due to your increased risk of osteoporosis (bone loss) and heart disease. Eat a high-fiber, low-fat diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Get plenty of calcium (milk, cheese, yogurt) or take a calcium supplement. Steer clear of alcohol and caffeine, which can trigger hot flashes.
  • Stay active. Regular exercise (30 minutes a day, most days of the week) helps you maintain a healthy weight, sleep better, strengthen your bones and improve your mood.
  • Reduce stress. Relaxation techniques such as meditation and yoga can help you relieve symptoms and maintain a positive outlook.
