Do I Need a Urologist?

Many women find themselves wondering a similar question: “If I already have a gynecologist, why would I need a urologist?”

It depends on what’s happening in your body. While a gynecologist specializes in vaginal health, a urologist specializes in issues affecting urination, including pelvic floor disorders. Your pelvic floor is group of muscles, ligaments, connective tissue and nerves that help support and control the rectum, uterus, vagina and bladder.

Many common life events, such as childbirth, strain from repeated heaving lifting, chronic disease or surgery could all contribute to or cause pelvic floor damage. Here are some of the most common conditions and their symptoms:

  • Incontinence: Loss of bladder/bowel control, causing leakage of urine or feces.
  • Prolapse: One or more pelvic organs (bladder, uterus or rectum) slip out of place and descend into the vagina or anus. You may feel a bulge and/or pressure, like something is coming out. You may also experience incontinence.
  • Emptying disorder: Difficulty urinating or moving bowels.
  • Pelvic (or bladder) pain: Discomfort, burning or other uncomfortable pelvic symptoms, including bladder and urethral pain.
  • Overactive bladder: Frequent need to go, sudden urgency to go or difficulty holding back a full bladder.

When should you see a urogynecologist?

If you’re experiencing any of the symptoms described above, talk to your primary care physician at Riverview Health immediately, and ask if a referral to a urogynecologist could be helpful. While your primary care physician or OB/GYN may be able to help you understand pelvic floor disorder, a urogynecologist is best to diagnose and treat it.
