Ergonomics is defined as the science of designing and arranging things to increase efficiency, safety and ease of use. When applied to the workplace, ergonomics is about fitting the task to the worker rather than forcing the worker to make modifications for the task at hand.

By optimizing work functions, workers tend to complete tasks more efficiently and carefully, thereby reducing their daily stress. Employees who exercise regularly and implement ergonomic exercises in the workplace experience less mental fatigue, take fewer sick days and show more energy and productivity throughout the day.

Proper ergonomics incorporates regular cardio activity (such as walking) and stretching breaks, which have been shown to reduce physical trauma in the workplace. While there are several exercises you can practice, it’s important to remember to also try relaxation techniques throughout the day. The ultimate goal is to become a more mentally and physically fit employee. Employees who practice postural and mental exercises tend to set and achieve more goals and have better overall attitudes compared to colleagues who don’t practice those exercises.

Developing habits to improve your ergonomics and decrease the risk of overuse injuries is easy. All it takes is a little time and effort to practice proper techniques and healthy habits.
