When Caring for Others, Don’t Forget About Yourself

Caring for those we love can be a full-time job. And like any full-time job, it’s important to stay healthy so you’re doing the most efficient work you’re capable of. With that said, when you care for a loved one, you may often put his or her feelings, illnesses and everyday needs before your own. But putting others before yourself can be not only stressful, but also dangerous.

According to Family Caregiver Alliance, caregiving spouses between the ages of 66 and 96 who are experiencing stress related to caregiving have a 63 percent higher mortality rate than those who are the same age but aren’t caregivers.

Think about the emergency instructions when you are on an airplane—put your oxygen mask on yourself before putting it on your dependents or others. Being a caregiver is no different. It’s important to remember that only when we first help ourselves may we successfully help others.

Follow these tips to start caring for yourself so you can better care for others:

  • Decrease and healthfully manage stress by setting goals and working with a wellness coach.
  • Seek positive solutions in difficult situations.
  • Communicate constructively with all who are involved in the care of your loved one, including a physician.
  • Ask for help when needed. We all need assistance in our lives and others understand this.
  • Keep yourself healthy by eating nutrient-rich foods and incorporating physical activity into your day.
  • Learn from your emotions by practicing mindful reflections.
