Mammograms, Breast Ultrasound and Breast Biopsies at Riverview Health

Mammograms, which are X-rays of the breast, are typically performed on women once a year, starting at age 40. They screen for breast cancer, even if a woman is not having symptoms.

Breast ultrasound also plays a role in diagnosing breast cancer. Typically, an ultrasound differentiates solid masses from fluid filled masses (cysts) and is especially important for women with dense breast tissue.

The staff at Riverview Health in Noblesville, IN, have years of experience performing mammograms, breast ultrasounds and other imaging tests to help women stay on top of their breast health. If you’re noticing any changes in your breast, schedule a visit with one of our imaging specialists today.

Types of Mammograms at Riverview Health

We currently offer the following types of mammograms:

  • Screening mammogram. This type of mammogram detects breast cancer in women who aren’t having any symptoms.
  • Diagnostic mammogram. A diagnostic mammogram helps diagnose abnormal changes in breasts, including lumps or nipple discharge, aiding as an evaluation tool for abnormalities identified at the time of screening.
  • 3D mammogram/tomosynthesis. Unlike traditional 2D mammography, 3D mammography enables radiologists to examine breast tissue layer by layer and detect early or subtle findings of breast cancer.
  • Computer-aided mammogram. This computer program identifies areas of interest on the mammographic images and is used with all mammograms performed at Riverview Health.

How Breast Ultrasound & Mammograms Work Together

Breast ultrasound is typically performed as a follow-up to an abnormal mammogram. When mammograms and breast ultrasound are done together, it helps ensure the most comprehensive diagnosis, especially in the setting of dense breast tissue.

Types of Breast Biopsies at Riverview Health

Breast biopsies are performed to determine whether an abnormality identified at the time of a diagnostic check-up is cancerous or related to a normal/benign process.

We currently offer the following types of breast biopsy:

  • Vacuum-assisted core biopsy with stereotactic and ultrasound guidance. This type of image-guided biopsy is minimally invasive, fast and involves little to no recovery time.
  • Preoperative needle localization with excisional biopsy. The needle localization portion of this procedure is done in the Riverview Health Bone & Breast Center, and the excisional biopsy is done in the Riverview Health Surgery Center. Needle localization allows the breast surgeon to accurately find and treat the area of disease in the breast and remove the smallest amount of tissue possible.
  • Various other breast procedures. Additional procedures may be offered as necessary, such as cyst aspiration, galactogram, breast MRI biopsy and 3D tomosynthesis biopsy.
